DISASTER MANAGEMENT SERVICES

Disaster Management services include all aspects of planning for and responding to disasters. It refers to the management of both the risks and the consequences of disasters. Disaster Risk Management identifies risk reduction strategies and aims to lessen the impact of specific disasters that cannot be prevented.

Our objective is to promote an integrated and coordinated Disaster Management system, with a special emphasis on prevention and mitigation.

Together with strategic partners, we render services in the following fields:

  • Drought Relief
  • Dolomite and Sinkhole incidents
  • Mining
  • Informal Settlements
  • Local Government

Some of the tools used in Disaster Management include:

  • GIS Mapping and System Development
  • Community Based Early Warning Systems
  • Risk Reduction and Response and Recovery Plans
  • Community Coordination
  • Disaster Relief

Disaster Risk Assessment Model

We apply a unique disaster risk assessment model which has been successfully used in various areas to determine the local risks. The model is based on an all-risk, all-hazards and resilience approach.

Data gathering in risk assessment includes the following:

  • Hazards
  • Critical facilities
  • Social information
  • Economical information
  • Technological information
  • Environmental information

The data is interpreted and quantified to compile a risk profile and enable the identification of priority risks.

GIS services in Disaster Management

  • Collation of baseline information
  • Hazard and vulnerability mapping
  • Risk mapping
  • Database design and maintenance

GIS and Integrated Spatial Planning

Projects and community development occur in a specific spatial locality necessitating comprehensive regional and local planning through Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Spatial planning services integrate geo-environmental, social and engineering aspects to promote sustainable development in both rural and urban contexts.  The following services are available:

Geographic Information Systems

  • Integration of spatial geo-environmental, social and built environment data
  • Application of spatial planning tools and multi-functional layering
  • Data collation, interpretation and display for effective decision making
  • Data processing (interpolation, raster generation and raster processing)
  • Database compilation and mapping
  • Custom made applications and online viewers

Integrated Spatial Planning

  • Land identification and analysis
  • Integrated housing development projects
  • Informal settlement programmes
  • Rural development programmes
  • Sustainable community planning
  • Research and development of alternative housing options
